One of the first book series to ever spark Chase's interest was the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. I like my kids to read books that incorporate mythologies or historical fictions. I think they offer an interesting way to pique interest in history. And once you have their attention, what better way to bring home the facts than through a field trip?
At the Roman Coliseum |
Chase was already interested in seeing Italy from stories Marina told about her own trip. I think reading Percy Jackson also helped Chase decide on where he wanted to go with his aunt. They started in Rome, Italy and worked their way south to Sorrento, stopping for a side trip to Pompeii. Now they took a ferry across to Greece for the second half of their trip. On the schedule is Olympia, Delphi, and Athens. So far, his favorite sights have been the Coliseum and the Sistine Chapel. I'm thankful he was able to have this opportunity. I'm also thankful for Skype, which has made it possible for us to communicate with him in Italy, via his iPod Touch. We're not sure if he can find wifi connections in Greece, so we may have to rely on his aunt for emails and a possible call. International calls are expensive, especially when you consider we were video chatting for free. I'm reasonably sure the iPod paid for itself on this trip.
First day in Greece |
We don't have many pictures right now, only what has been sent by my sister-in-law's camera phone. When he comes back, I will help him sort through and post more details about the trip.
Update: Chase had wifi in Olympia, so he was able to call us! Skype is awesome!

Oh, wow, what a brilliant opportunity. I'll never forget visiting some of those places at his age. Awesome!! I agree with you about those stories which contain myth and/or history too.
The best of all ways to get an education! I am looking forward to seeing Chase's pictures. I miss him! Love, Mom
