Backyard Wild Kingdom

We've had an incredible bird week. We started on Sunday with the white pigeon. He returned for several days, but we haven't seen him since last Thursday. I'm hoping the frosty overnight weather kept him away and not any predators.

Speaking of predators, here was today's guest at the bird feeder. Hubby is putting together the video footage, but a picture will have to do for now.

No lack of activity in our backyard habitat. This fellow almost caught a squirrel that was raiding the feeders. The squirrel managed to escape. I think the hawk's eyes were bigger than his stomach. Or his talons. It was one of those moments where I didn't know who to root for. The squirrel was eating my birdseed, but I wouldn't want him to be dinner for the hawk. Contrariwise, I feel bad that the hawk lost a meal. Perhaps I should put out mouse pops along with the bird seed. Or maybe I could just leave the shrews that Dusty catches for the hawk.

OK. The word about you guys has gotten out to the bird world. I think your idea about the shrew is very good. And it saves you all those burials.

Love, Mom
