For any who are interested, here is Marina's birthday cake. It took me 3 hours to make, but I was pleased with the results. It all started with seeing a dragon cake posted on another blog for St. George's Day. I found that if you google "dragon cake" you get various cakes all with a similar template. I have never been known to follow instructions when it comes to creative endeavors, so here was my version of the dragon cake:
I did add wings, but I wasn't thrilled with how they turned out. The cake was a velvet cake recipe, the frosting was an improvised confectioner's frosting from my Fannie Farmer cookbook, I used Milano cookies for the ears, eyelids and scales and chocolate chips for the eyes, nostrils and claws. Below, you can kind of see the wings, which were fruit roll-ups on wooden skewers.
My only mistake was making a filling out of melted chocolate chips, butter, confectioner's sugar and cream. It was very fudgy, but like fudge it became candy bar hard when I refrigerated the cake. You live and learn. It still tasted good.
