Naming the cat.
In our family, it's a long drawn out process that can take hours. Or days. The more people involved in the process, the longer it can take.
"The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,Of course, once you find a name, lots of other appropriate names appear. Each of our cats has an average of three names, which doesn't include their secret name.
It isn't just one of your holiday games"
~The Naming of Cats, T.S. Eliot
"When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name."
~The Naming of Cats, T.S. Eliot

Serious business, that. We have the same thing with the guinea pigs. I like those T S Eliot quotes to support your point.

Great quotes! It took weeks to decide on what type of name would be good for our bird. Fortunately, everyone was finally happy with Pippin...I hope the bird is!
This comic sounds just like my siblings and me when we were growing up!
I like the quotes you used for names too.
Naming is a serious thing, I agree!
And may I say . . . . especially for a cat!
So it isn't just my house with this issue. I was starting to think it was simply a case of too many cats!
So, did you end up naming the kitty "key"? =)
We had a TERRIBLE time naming our dog. He's a Japanese Chin so we wanted something really nifty like "Tsunami" or something odd like "Emperor Hirohito".
In the mean time my husband called him "du kleine maus" because a) we'd just come back from Germany and b) our puppy was so tiny he didn't bark, he squeaked.
Soooo we debated for some time. Two or three weeks. Then we had a big family meeting to finally name our dog...and my husband said "Uhm, guys.....he responds to Maus. Look" and then he called "Maus!" and over bumbled the puppy.
And that's been his name ever since. A german name for a Japanese Chin. A dog called mouse. It's totally bizarre and fits our family. =D
I'm glad Eliot made it in this post. :)
love your series on naming the new kitten - i think every family must have a funny story about naming a cat :^)
