Our Week So Far...

If I seem quiet lately, I've been busy doing all of those last minute trip-related errands that make me wonder why I'm not the one going on the trip.

I'm kidding. I'm happy for Marina. I'm sure Italy will be wonderful and a fantastic educational opportunity for her. Just think, she'll be seeing all of those places she's read about! We're hoping for a clear day for her flight next week and receding floodwaters in Venice. She's supposed to be in Venice during Carnival.

In other news, Sierra is still forcefully unschooling. I think she wants to get a college degree before she learns to read and write. We were in the library the other day and she scoffed at my suggestion that she pick out some beginning reader books. "Those are baby books!" she told me. "I like my BOB Books!" She usually takes out half of the animal reference books and some Dora the Explorer board books. I did manage to sneak in a couple of picture books. She really seemed to enjoy Ballerina by Peter Sis and The Nine Lives of Aristotle by Dick King Smith. Which is good, because she hated The Dot and the Line: A Romance in Lower Mathematics by Norton Juster. Ever since I read that to her she tells me I pick weird books. I love my daughter.

Chase and Sierra have been enjoying playing Spore. Chase recently made it to the center of the universe. I'm so proud. He got an award called 42. The game developers have a great sense of humor!

Marina is enjoying her new job at the library. The only downside is that she doesn't have time to take out books. Ironic, isn't it? She said that by the time she's finished with work, we've finished browsing and just want to go home. I figure once a week I'll take my time picking her up so she can look at books. It's the least I can do. She is earning more money than I am.

Marina will never be quite the same after her trip. I visited Italy when I was 15 and still regret not buying a gorgeous leather skirt from Florence. I hope she'll have lots of spending money.
Sierra sounds like a card. If she and Blake ever got together, I wonder if they'd get anything done beyond asserting themselves as free-thinking individuals.
Blessings,
Paula

Though our family tends to follow the Classical Method, I always admire those who can Unschool and get great results.

Homeschoolers are so individual. My sixteen year old son enjoys studying Russian history and is teaching himself beginning Russian in his free time; my fifteen year old daughter spends her free time writing novels and drawing; I wonder what my younger boys will be into when they hit the teen years...

I am so excited for Marina and not a BIT jealous that she's going to Italy. :-D It sounds like a great week.

Math is an acquired taste - give Sierra time. I liked fractions when we divided candy, fruit, cakes, etc.
I hope Marina has wonderful weather and an excellent trip. What day does she leave?
Love, Aunt Linda
