Home Spun comic strip #330
Every once in a while someone surprises me by telling me how good I am at what I do. Words like "organized," "supermom," and "multi-talented" get thrown around. I don't know where they get these ideas.
I consider myself a fly by the seat of my pants, one day--sometimes one hour at a time homeschooler. If I've learned anything from my journey, it's that a sense of humour about everything really helps keep the insanity at bay.
I have had an occasional family member, friend or acquaintance be so inspired by my life that they try homeschooling. Believe me, I try to talk them out of it. No one should walk this road because they are inspired by me. I agonized over my choice. I have days when I still agonize over it, but the kids are very adamant about continuing homeschooling. No matter how much I beg.
In all seriousness, this is not a decision to be made lightly. I would love to have more friends and family choose homeschooling, but they shouldn't base their choice on me. Each family travels this road in their own unique fashion. Each child learns in their own special way. I can offer support, perhaps some guidance, a shoulder to cry on, but I only know how to teach my own.
And some days, I don't even know that.

The fact that you know the limitations of your wisdom (even when teaching your own kids) only shows how wise you really are. I think it's great that you're a testament to how well HSing can work, *if* that's what a family wants.
Marina, when I first started homeschooling I would lecture everyone on the pros because I saw no cons - but 10 years later I don't talk about it at all, unless I am asked, and then I only answer specific questions with fact. It's so true, we all travel different roads, we all have a unique life call, and we all need to follow our hearts for our OWN family.
Personally, I think you're pretty cool too - listen to your kids, they know they have a great mum!
Hugs,
jenny
And not only that, you make it look fun too. =)
You look like a Supermom to me! Homeschooling seems to be one of the many parenting decisions I'm always questioning. There are days when I'm certain the kids would be better off in a brick and mortar school and other days when it feels like we own the world. There is no way I would advise another mom to definately homeschool her kids- and yet every woman looking into homeschooling is looking for just that. Until you're "in the trenches" you don't realize how subjective each individuals experiences really are... kind of like curriculum. No one curriculum fits every child. No one educational choice fits every family. Sigh... we're still trying to figure out if it fits us.
Yep, the longer I homeschool, the less inclined I am to try to talk someone else into it. And that from someone who often answers newbie questions and provides a lot of resources. I want to help make it happen for those who choose it but that is different than talking them into it. I am seen as a supermom too but the sad fact is that I have strengths and weaknesses like anyone. It is just that my strengths are really strong and they hide my weaknesses (which are really weak). I try to be as open and transparent as I can to keep people from drawing wrong conclusions but it seems impossible at times to prevent it.
You really nail it often with your strips. So you are good at that. I bet that your toilets would fail random inspections as often as my would. LOL
