Chase has always loved his superheroes, movie and cartoon characters. As I write this, he's playing with Star Wars action figures with Sierra. I like that he is 13 and still enjoys some imaginative play with his little sister. Unfortunately, it's always been hard to find the superhero/character of the moment when he wants a costume for Halloween. They never seem to have his size. The stores always seem to assume that kids will move on to more sophisticated costumes when my son still wanted to dress up as Yu-Gi-Oh. After my last endless search for his favorite character in the right size, I put my foot down. From now on, he has to make his own costume. Last year he was "Death's Door." This year he's going to be Skulduggery Pleasant, the skeleton detective.
I should have put my foot down a long time ago.

I have so much to say. We (Todd and I) just got your comment (it appeared while Todd was reading my blog) so we've been talking about you. The kids think it's neat that you are in NY and it's after lunch there. It's still morning here, dark and raining. We never seem to wake up on days like this. Anyway, thanks for your helpful comments! I don't get the kids in the kitchen to help me often enough, though I want to. I once wrote about my then-6 year old Carmen helping me make brownies and she asked when we were going to add the sugar. Yes, I had forgotten but she hadn't! Sounds like a good helper right there!
I loved, loved your post about John Astin! We were avid viewers of Adams Family and I've always loved Poe. My sister read Poe when I was about 8 or 9 so I started early. How fun that you were able to take Marina to hear Mr. Astin speak! I love the opportunities you give your kids - so inspiring! I'm so glad you went, you'll never forget it.
It's nice to hear that your son still enjoys imaginative play with his younger sister. My 14 year old son is the same way. I know one day it will end but I'm enjoying it while it lasts! I don't recall Chad every dressing up for Halloweeen but my younger two each made themselves a spider and ladybug costumes this year. Cardboard and paint was all they needed - aren't I lucky!
I got a fun word verification the other day - it was "emera". It's what you answer when a child asks the question, "What is a looking glass?" It also sounds like a good name for a betta.

We usually have indecisive kids about what to be for Halloween, but this year I put my foot down, saying that if we're going to make costumes, we must stick to what we've chosen. And so Luke is making his own Robin Hood costume, learning to use the sewing machine to do it.
I love homeschooling for so many reasons, but right now two primary ones are that a) you can still be Robin Hood at nine without embarrassment, and b) a boy can learn to sew and feel proud instead of conflicted.

Kate: The simplest costume ideas we've gotten here was Poseidon (draped him in green fabric and painted a devil's fork to look like a trident) and princess. I love when the girls just want to be a princess. So easy!
On the other hand, things like Marie Antoinette were labor intensive...

I once went in a blue sweatshirt with cotton balls glued all over it carrying a water pistol. If anyone asked me I was "Cloudy with a chance of rain" as I squirted water in the air. Only one person asked. They were not amused at the water showering down on them. *sigh*. =(
