Do you have days when you wonder why you let anyone buy toys for your child? I think back to what amused my children the most (or still amuses them) and I think of cardboard boxes and tubes, juggling scarves, socks, water, shampoo or soap, pillows, sticks, rocks, and dandelions. If anything, I buy a lot of art and craft supplies, especially pens, markers, beads, pipe cleaners, Model Magic and duct tape. If I feel like torturing myself, I also get some glitter.
What are some of your child's favorite non-toy toys?

First I wanted to comment on your previous post - I was an avid glue-skin peeler. My dad saw me peeling it from my palm one day and brought me some hand lotion (Jergens) - he thought I had dry skin! Bless him!
I know my kids had odd playthings when they were very small, just can't remember right now. I know they get very attached to anything they create - origami, craft project, clay figures. Kids know what to play with - manufacturers just want your money!
Enjoy your week - Kate
Dress-up clothes! Ohmygosh. Any time I wanted to toss/donate something, my kids would claim it for their dress-up box. From grandma's cast-off necklaces and clip-on earrings, to lace curtains (worn as shawls/trains), my kids outfitted themselves and their friends, then performed backyard theater. LOL My kids are 20-somethings now, and they each have multiple costumes (& parts) in their own possession, besides what is still left here!
It's amazing how well an empty box will keep a kid occupied on Christmas morning!
My youngest claims every box that makes its way into our house and has a meltdown when we have to get rid of any. I had to laugh at the glitter comment. If I don't laugh, I'll cry. It seems every single week at church his class makes some kind of craft or picture that uses glitter. He brings it home, and half falls off all over my house. My living room floor is a nice sparkly gold right now.
I love this strip and Ana playing "kitty" with her socks. My fondest toy memories are of "material" - scraps of fabric from my grandmother that my sister and I tied onto little wooden dolls. And "palace" - old jewelry from my grandmother and aunt that we arranged into sumptuous throne rooms. And of course, there was "dirt box" which my grandfathers created for us in the back yard and where we spent hours making mud pies. See. Kids don't change over the centuries.

Utensils.
How could I forget utensils? And dress up clothes?
Mom, I love the names of your childhood games. Concise and to the point. :o)
Mikro's favorites are acorns, seashells, rocks, willow branches, empty plastic easter eggs, and, for reasons that completely escape me, a zipper that we picked up at a crafts store for some project or another, but which he appropriated to play with as a snake. Oh, yeah, belts work for this, too. It's all about the faux reptiles...
