It's important to me that my children learn to be somewhat self-sufficient. I'm happy to report that they are all able to at least cook breakfast, cut and prepare vegetables, and put their clothes away (most of the time.) Marina has become quite the baker, Chase can make pancakes for breakfast (from scratch, not a mix), Sierra can scramble eggs and all three can handle side dishes for dinner.
I admit I'm not inclined to give up the laundry to their care. I have trust issues when it comes to the care of my clothes. I figure the first time I cause a pink wash or shrink a sweater my teenagers will insist on doing their own wash....just like I did.

Good lesson! Makes everyone's lives easier in the long run. Last year, I read a friend's book in which she said that she made her 15yo son do his own laundry by simply going on strike when it came to his clothes. He got tired of having nothing to wear and got the message. I couldn't help thinking Logan (now 16) would be content to wear the dirty ones until I caved in. I tend to agree with you regarding laundry.
Cristina! We heard on the radio a few hours ago about OBL's death and heard that people were gathering near Ground Zero in NYC. I actually thought of you and wished we could both meet there and hug the policemen together! I do not celebrate anyone's death but I am glad this manhunt is finally over. My husband wishes we could have taken him alive and put him on trial. From the Royal Wedding to this. It's been a busy weekend.

I think I may be unusual in regards to laundry. I am so laid back about it. My 8 year old has been doing laundry (ALL our laundry) for about a year. We don't sort, everything gets washed in cold. It all goes in together, so it's simple for him.
:-). Great that the kids are able to do so much already! That is awesome! I am thankful that my kids were interested in it during the younger years and I tapped into that interest early on. Now they struggle to manage their time with what they need to get done academically, enrichment-wise and also chores around the house. My daughter is becoming busier day by day...but has few allotted duties she tries to get to...For us, it was easier to manage it all when the kids were younger...sigh.

Learning everyday tasks is an important education. In fact it's vital - eating and keeping clean! I am happy to see your generation teaching boys as well as girls to cook and do laundry. Does anyone iron anymore? Love, Mom
I don't, so it's hard to teach them that skill! If you fold things immediately from the dryer, they really won't get that wrinkled. :o)

I have tried to do the "life skills" think with my oldest, but he refuses. He is very much in a "stage" right now. Still trying...............
