Home Spun comic strip #742

Home Spun comic strip #742

The first author I ever met was Maurice Sendak. I told him he inspired my artwork. He asked if I was an illustrator. In my young mind (I was nineteen or twenty) I thought I had to be making money to be called an illustrator, so I said no. A moment later I realized what he meant, but there was the press of the line behind me and I was embarrassed, so I quietly let him sign my book and I moved on. But I met him, and I'll never forget that. Thank you, Mr. Sendak, for filling my imagination with Wild Things.

How wonderful to meet him! Now I'm curious ... what other authors have you met? Do tell! We were saddened to hear of Mr. Sendak's passing. My kids loved the Little Bear books, which he illustrated. So glad you have that special memory. Oh, thank you for your comment! Enjoy your week - Kate

P.S. I just read your previous post (Oh, Happy Mothers' Day, late!) Chad and I share the same kind of interests, no doubt. My younger two aren't always as enthusiastic about my interests so I know how it feels. I wonder if it has anything to do with being the oldest child - we, as mothers, are the greatest influence on our first child, while the later children have more people involved to influence their likes and dislikes. Just my theory, since it seems to apply to my family. But, oh, isn't it wonderful to have someone to share your excitement (just ask Chad what his mother does when she spots a Belted Kingfisher!) - Kate

Goodness, I've met a lot of authors! I take advantage of any book store book signings by authors I like, and there has been an annual Children's Book day nearby that we've taken the kids to more than once to meet authors. My list includes Bruce Coville, Tamora Pierce, Jean Craighead George, Jean Fritz, Scott Mebus, Alyssa Satin Capucilli and recently R.J. Palacio. There are many more, I would need to go through my collection to remember!

Your theory is interesting. I'll have to think about that. And I would have gotten excited over the Belted Kingfisher too. :o)
