Opportunity knocks....
Harvard University announced over the weekend that from now on
undergraduate
students from low-income families will pay no tuition. In making the
announcement, Harvard's president Lawrence H. Summers said, 'When only 10
percent of the students in Elite higher education come from families in
lower half of the income distribution, we are not doing enough. We are not
doing enough in bringing elite higher education to the lower half of the
income distribution.'
If you know of a family earning less than $60,000 a year with an honor
student graduating from high school soon, Harvard University wants to pay
the tuition. The prestigious university recently announced that from
now on
undergraduate students from low-income families can go to Harvard for
free...no tuition and no student loans!

I think it is awesome that one of our most prestigious universities is finally realizing that college is becoming priced out for those of us living on a modest income. My brother went to Harvard about twenty years ago and he was paying back his loans for years after. (I'll wait for my parents to verify exactly how long it took.) This is an idea whose time came years ago. If colleges truly want the best and brightest they need to look beyond the limits of parents' wallets. Let's hope that Harvard's action inspires other colleges to follow suit, especially now that I have a child reaching college age...

I heard this announcement on the radio and thought: "Too bad they didn't think of this when my son went to Harvard!" However, one of our loans, which I called the "neverending loan" was forgiven one bright day. Harvard used their endowment to do this so even way back they were realizing they have more money than they know what to do with. Anyway I was and remain truly grateful. Now the trick is to get your kid into Harvard.
