Home Spun comic strip #312

Home Spun comic strip #312

I figured I should clarify that this set of strips is based on events from some years ago. Even Toaster is based on a few cats who are with us now in spirit only. I've toyed with the idea of adding those memories to the strip, but they are still a bit fresh in our minds. Between illness and old age, we lost five cats in four years.

The only new kitten we have right was brought to us by my dad a few months ago, with the hope that we would find her a home. She is almost a year old now. We're trying, but even our shelter contact has confirmed that people aren't adopting lately. The economy has caused many to give up beloved pets. That is a shame. We are doing OK right now, so I would rather let our latest guest stay a little longer. Maybe I'll eat less to make up for the extra cat food and lose a few pounds!

We have a bird instead of a dog since we have to move a lot (military) and are never sure if we'll have an enclosed yard - or any yard - at the next home. (Though my husband loves cats and they love him, he's terribly allergic to them.)

Anyway, my dad once asked our elderly pastor if there was a verse for him and his beloved pet. He said, "A righteous man regardeth his beast." It's good that you all take such an interest in your pets; it's the way it should be.

You may have discovered the latest dieting fad! If it works, you can write a book, and get rich and famous.
Take care. Love, Linda

Yes, so many pets being turned over to the shelters and rescue groups due to the economy ... so terribly sad. Hubby wants another Aussie badly (even though I've questioned us doing this in the current economy), but the adoption fees have gone up tremendously - to the point of being beyond ridiculous. One of the techs at our vet's office said the high fees are supposed to be an assurance that the person/family adopting the pet can afford to care for the pet. I keep thinking what a lot of food $400 would buy (yep, $400 for adopting/rescuing an Aussie!). He told the vet tech to put the word out at their office that we'd be willing to take one needing a home that's being given away (one vet and one tech have gotten them recently this way). We'll see what happens.......

You asked if that included certificates for food or actual food - nope! Unbelievable. We paid just $60 to adopt our youngest Aussie a few years ago.
