Home Spun strip #325

Home Spun comic strip #325

I want to start by restating my belief that there is a place for movies and television as a learning tool. I know homeschoolers who will proudly declare their homes "TV free" and I think it's admirable that they are able to do that. I can't. I grew up with television, and it comforted me through many hospital stays for asthma after visiting hours were over.

That said, I don't know how many people would enjoy watching movies with us. We are very vocal. We don't go to the movies often, but when we do, we are literally bursting with discussion by the time the movie finishes. I encourage my children to read the books before we watch movies that are based on them. This usually means there are shouts of "Why did they add that?" and "That's not what the characters did!" during movie time. Marina has come to terms with poor film adaptations by accepting the movie as a separate entity.

It is a bummer when the movie strays far afield from the book but it's good that Marina can separate the two. Once I learned to do that (not that long ago, either) I was able to enjoy both interpretations. And, yes, we are a TV-free home but I never, ever brag about it. It's just what works for us.

I love the Vatican City photos! So beautiful - and rich with history! I'm showing them to Todd at the moment. I so appreciate you letting us tour Italy with your daughter and your mom! And how terrific that the weather cleared up for her on the 2nd day!

Have a great week!

I love this cartoon because it is oh so true. We used TV in our homeschool as well and we have it in our home. -And by the way, I understand the asthma troubles oh too well. There are so many reasons why I can't stand the Scarlet Pimpernel movies and all of my friends loved them- they didn't read the book first. I felt like Marina though because I made sure to read the Lord of the Rings after the movies came out. I wanted to like both the movies and the books. ;)

My children always complain when movies are different from the books. They were first introduced to this with the Harry Potter films. They love the books and are always a little disappointed in the books.

One movie that all my kids agree is right with the book is The Polar Express.

I love your comics :)

The photos from Marina's trip are gorgeous!

We are not a tv free family and I can't imagine not using it as a learning tool. I understand all too well what you mean about the comments during the movie when it doesn't go right along with the book. I don't think my hubby heard most of Prince Caspian the first time he watched because ds1 was so busy telling him everything that didn't line up with the book. :o)

I always feel the same way when I see a movie adaptation of a great book! It's always a let down.

I used to think movies and T.V. were inferior to books as a learning tool, but my kids have taught me differently. :-)

I'm glad Marina is able to seperate moviess from the books they're based on. I've been able to enjoy movies better doing that.
