We found it in the backyard. Anyone know what it is? I thought it might be a puffball, but it doesn't puff. Chase thought it might be a decaying soccer ball, but it is stuck fast to the ground. We're afraid to touch it.
Here's a close up. I'm not sure if those pock marks mean something was snacking on it.
This is the size comparison. Sierra is probably average size for an 8 year old.
I'm a little afraid. What if we fall asleep and it takes over?
Update: According to comments on my daughter's blog from ~*~The Family~*~ and my own dear sister, this is indeed a puffball! Go figure. I didn't think they could get so big. So of course I had to look it up and found info from local Wild Man Steve Brill. (Dad, I'm not eating it. If you want to, you are welcome to collect it.) Ours must still be slightly damp from all the rain we had, because it acted more like leather covered Styrofoam when we poked it. Thanks for the help in identifying this!

WOW! That is huge! I have no idea...
umm, a mutant mushroom?
We have had a lot of rain this past week... I've never seen one get this big!
wow, you've got a sci fi feature in your own backyard.
I would just say it's a fungus. And nod sagely.
*nods*
It's a mushroom and somebody's eating it. I get one a year that graws in the tree at the front of the house. I love to see them grow, but someone messes it up every year. The last time I looked at this year's, it was still intact.
Love, Dad
The first time I saw a puffball, it gave me quite a start. I was hiking down a seldom-used trail, and the configuration of the pock-marks made it look like a skull! A friend and I were avid hikers, and we had joked about finding "a body" (macbre I know) and I thought I had! I grabbed a stick and approached carefully...boy was I relieved!
I'm glad you got this ID'd. I am also glad you're not eating it.
OK. I must say that I love to eat mushrooms. I saw the photos but immediately thought, "YUK!"
We get puffballs a bit like that. Wow, that one is enormous. I was thinking it's surely fungal based until you enlightened me.
It still looks like Invasion of the Body Snatchers to me. What's a puffball anyway? Love, Mom
