Home Spun comic strip #510

I have to give an ht to Little Blue School for the Learning Latin with Virgil YouTube videos. Those have really come in handy around here. Muzzy Spanish was also a good investment. I am not really a fan of Dora. Maybe I'm just too impatient with her and her map. Maybe the problem is my children were never into answering the TV people. I do know the pregnant pauses after each question make me think of the boring teacher in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Their favorite method of language learning has been watching loved TV shows in Spanish. I like this method myself. After watching episodes of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends over fifty times, it's actually refreshing to hear them in a different language. Sierra used to purposely borrow the Spanish version of Disney's Cinderella and other loved movies at our library when she was five or six.

Of course, the greatest help is having someone bilingual around. Just so they hear another language being used.

¡claro que sí! It's so hard to learn another language without the "human factor".

Ben Stein was the boring teacher in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. When we are discussing things and the kids give me that blank look I say the "anyone?....anyone?" and they get a laugh out of it. Your post makes me think I want to see that movie again.

Great point about tv shows. When my daughter was younger, she was fascinated by Spanish soap operas. She loved going around the house with a long face and saying "Muerta! Muerta!" LOL

Cristina,
The way I learned other languages in India was by watching the movies in that language without the subtitles...no, there were no concepts of subtitles at that time, so we had to make do with facial expressions, tone and the words...repeated watching of certain popular artists and directors eventually got me to learn enough to converse and understand conversations...then I learned to read and write..it is a bit strange and not sure if this is how one is supposed to learn a foreign language..but it worked for me and now for kids too...:)) Well, with respect to kids, it is ahem my lazy way of teaching Indian languages, lol...

fun post...and yes, Dora was too slow:)). I am although fascinated by the Spanish soaps and talk shows. I probably am not getting much of it at all, and now I don not have tv, but earlier days of living in the US, I was spending much of my free time just having fun watching Spanish shows and movies:)) Oh I also watched french, Chinese, Japanese, and Italian..no I have no background in any of it..but could understand the movies:))

Subadra: You are not the only one who learns languages that way! I originally considered the idea when some of my Puerto Rican cousins explained how their kids learned English by watching American cartoons!
